Inland of its picturesque ribbon of coastal towns, Montenegro is comprised of range after range of dramatic limestone mountains which hide pretty alpine lakes, remote villages and unspoiled valleys cloaked in pine forest. The country seems purpose-made for mountain biking and has a network of excellent cross-country trails, following ancient pathways and drovers' tracks, some of which we have incorporated within this exciting week-long adventure. Aiming to see as much as possible of the mountainous heart of the country, our anti-clockwise circuit from Niksic takes us through the Moraca Canyon to Kolasin, then eastwards again to Mokra Planina (‘Misty Mountain') on the border with Kosovo. Hotel accommodation each night provides us with all the comforts of home, whilst transfers at the start and finish of several of the day-rides allow us to access some of the best biking in Montenegro. Recrossing the Bjelasica Mountains, we loop towards the north, via the beautiful plateau of Sinjajevina, which in summer is home to just a few shepherds and their flocks. Then, from Zabljak, gateway to the rugged Durmitor National Park, we enjoy a final climb amongst rugged landscapes, followed by a long downhill blast to the Nevideo Canyon. A last night at the historic, fjord-side town of Kotor brings this memorable holiday to a close with a suitably Mediterranean flavour.
Is this holiday for you?
FAT TYRE ADVENTURE. Knobbly tyres are required for this week of biking on rough cart tracks, forest roads and singletrack trails, with some connecting short sections on quiet country roads. The highest elevation encountered is just 2000 metres, so altitude is not an issue. However, there will be some longish days of biking with an average of 1000 metres of ascent each day. This is a trip for regular weekend bikers with a good level of fitness. BIKE HIRE AVAILABLE LOCALLY.
